RC Maintenance: Function Questions

Function questions ask why the author included a specific detail, example, or sentence — the RC cousin of LR's Role of a Statement.

1. Function, Not Content

Same abstraction rule as Role: the correct answer describes what the detail is doing in context (illustrating a claim, anticipating an objection, providing contrast), not what it literally says.

2. Zoom Out Before Answering

Reread the sentence or two around the referenced detail — function questions are almost always answerable from local context, not the whole passage.
